The RSPCA is urging the Federal government to support a bill tabled by independent MP Andrew Wilkie today in parliament, which would see a phase out of live animal exports by 1 July 2017.
The introduction of the Live Animal Export Prohibition (Ending Cruelty) Bill 2014 follows the death of hundreds of cattle and sheep on-board the Ocean Drover vessel.
During its extended journey en route to the Gulf of Aqaba earlier this month, the mortality rate on-board the ship exceeded the 2 per cent reportable mortality rate threshold as a result of mechanical issues and changes to feed conditions.
“It is time the Federal government supported a transition away from live animal exports and put an end to the inherent cruelty of this trade,” said RSPCA Australia CEO Heather Neil.
